Thanks Sheol! I already knew about the beer, nuts, chocolate, grapes, rasins, and meds (thats rather obvious though isn't it?) but the others I found rather interesting.

Our dog may be 13 years old but I don't want her to keel over just yet!

Bad news foods for your animals

Avocados
They contain a toxic component called persin, which can damage heart, lung and other tissue in many animals. This fruit is very toxic to dogs, cats and most animals.

Beer
Alcoholic beverages can cause the same damage to an animal's liver and brain as they cause in humans. But the effects can be deadly on animals since they are much smaller than us. The smaller the animal, the more deadly the effects can be. Even a small amount of alcohol may cause vomiting and damage the liver and brain.

Nuts
Walnuts and macadamia nuts are especially toxic. Effects can be anything from vomiting to paralysis to death. Within 12 hours of eating the nuts, pets start to develop symptoms such as an inability to stand or walk, vomiting, hyperthermia (elevated body temperature), weakness, and an elevated heart rate. These symptoms can be even worse if your dog eats some chocolate with the nuts. The effect can cause kidney failure, often leading to death.

Chocolate
Chocolate contains theobromine, which can kill your pet if eaten in large quantities. Dark and unsweetened baking chocolates are especially dangerous. Giving your pup a piece of chocolate cake or even letting him lick the chocolate icing on the cake could cause him to become ill. Theobromine can also cause a dog or cat's heart to beat very rapidly or irregularly, which could result in death if the pet is exercising or overly active.

Candy
Candy or anything containing Xylitol (a common sweetener found in some diet products) can cause a sudden drop in an animal's blood sugar, loss of coordination and seizures. If left untreated, the animal could die.

Caffeine
Coffee, tea or any product that contains caffeine stimulates an animal's central nervous and cardiac systems. This can lead to restlessness, heart palpitations and death, depending on how much the animal consumes.

Grapes and raisins
Grapes and raisins can lead to kidney failure in dogs. As little as a single serving of raisins can kill them. And the effects are cumulative, which means that even if a dog eats just one or two grapes or raisins regularly, the toxin that builds in his system will eventually kill him.

Onions
Onions are another common food that can be highly toxic to pets. They can destroy an animal's red blood cells and lead to anemia, weakness and breathing difficulties. Their effects are also cumulative over time.

Meds
Acetaminophen and ibuprofen are extremely toxic to animals, as well as most other over the counter meds for humans (duh!).

---- sorry if this post bothers anyone. I just found it very interesting since I like giving my pets table scraps, and I would love to have pointers on what not to give them to protect my little kitties. I hope you guys liked the info too, if not, then sorry.

You know, I myself need to loose A LOT of weight, even though I have a large bone frame. My Mom has put me on this diet where I cannot eat any wheat or dairy. Of course, I need to exercise as well on a weekly bases, and to count calories in such. My Mom has been on this diet for 3 months because she had a yeast infection, and has lost 14lbs! She's keep loosing more and more weight, so now she's as thin as she was in highschool! She's going to slowly transition to a regular diet, but it will take a while to be able to eat wheat and dairy foods regularly again without gaining much.

She also found that one woman lost 81 pounds in 4 months after being on this diet! I'm really hoping I'll have luck like that. I've been trying to loose weight for the past 4 years, and now that highschool is less than a year away for me, I'm really determined to lose it!

Great info you put in there Sheol. And your absolutely right about drinking the right fluids. Soda, as good as it may be, really isn't going to help you out in any way. If you really want to lose a little weight that way then water is best.

I also knew about the whole "body starvation mode" thing but I just can't help it. I CAN'T force myself to eat. Even when I'm at a buffet resturant where people normally pig out I reach a certain point and just stop eating, even if there's only one bite on my plate I refuse to eat it if I'm full.

Plus forcing myself to eat in the morning sometimes makes my nauseous...

I do like that method of scheduling certain times to eat. I really should try that out for myself.

Well, I'm 5'4" and weigh 95 lbs so according to my BMI I know I should gain a TON of weight! I'm suppose to be 110-116 lbs. I can't help it though, I have chronic diseases and a poor appetite.

I'm never really hungry. I've gone throughout the day missing breakfast and lunch, and then it will dawn on me around 7pm at night that I have not eaten yet at all today when my husband asks me "aren't you gonna cook supper?" I'm just not hungry, and I tend to be nauseated a lot from my meds and medical conditions. Plus, if I eat a large meal all at once, I'll vomit it back up from a problem with my esophagus, so I have to eat really small meals.

I've combatted this by (at the advice of my husband) setting my alarm to go off at certain times during the day for me to eat something, whether I'm hungry or not. So I eat four meals a day: one in the morning when I first wake up, on at noon between classes (when my alarm goes off), one in the afternoon when I immediately get home from school (again, alarm timed), and one at night before bed from my husband pestering me. That's been enough for me to maintain my 95 lbs :) (I use to be 89 lbs when I first met my husband).

From what I learned in school, not eating regularly (as in, only eating one or two large meals a day) actually causes a gain in weight cause it sends your body into starvation mode since it doesn't know when its next meal will be, and your body stores away every calorie it can get. A good way to lose weight is to eat 3-5 small meals throughout the day (a true small portion, not the American small portion that is actually quite large).

A small meal would be one measuring cup of cereal and a fruit, or six ounces of meat and a banana. :) As for drinking lots of fluids to lose weight, it depends on what you're drinking. If its soda or juice, your not gonna lose weight... I do know someone that lost ten pounds by increasing how much water they drunk.

I've noticed that when I hit my middle teens my eating habits really changed. Before I would eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner, but now I usually skip breakfast because I have no appetite in the morning whatsoever.

I also started eating LESS for some reason. They say that you should eat a big breakfast to avoid eating so much at lunch but that seems to have no affect on me. Whether I eat in the morning or not I still eat a relatively small amount for lunch and dinner which seems to amaze everyone around me.

A lot of times I find myself eating because I know I SHOULD rather then out of actual hunger. One day for example I skipped breakfast and didn't eat until 3:30 in the afternoon and even then I could have waited.

Also I'm not underweight or on a diet, that's just they way my body works for some reason. According to the Body Mass Index (BMI) I actually need to lose 8 pounds.

Does anybody else have weird eating habits like I do?

I like to limit how much I eat. Recently, i've been really stressed so i've been eating a lot and I just noticed too! Ahh but I think that if i limit it to replacing some of the excess food with liquids, then everything will be fine. :)

It is a good thing it eat healthy whether you are over weight or not. Most people don't realize this, but even thin people can die of heart attacks. Being overweight may increase your risk of a heart attack, but that doesn't mean only overweight people have them. You can be thin and appear healthy, and yet still have a heart attack cause your arteries are clogged from McDonald's and fried foods.

Okay now I know that my food choices are about as good as any other teenager, meaning that they're pretty bad most of the time.

But thankfully as of late I have been taking my future health more seriously by eating better now. I won't be chowing down on spinach and broccoli anytime soon but I am getting better.

I had planned on eating pizza for dinner tonight but instead I'm eating a salad and drinking orange juice.

I've also started getting wheat or whole grain bread when I can instead of that white, bleached stuff you always find crowding out space on supermarket shelves.

Now instead of driving by KFC, Mcdonalds, or Wendy's as I am prone to, I take time to go to Subway instead. I also used to love eating cold cereal like Corn Pops, Cocoa Krispies, or Frosted Flakes, now our family is on a Special K kick and it seems like we're going through a box every week or every other week at least. My favorite is the Fruit and Yogurt kind because it's just sweet enough to tame my sugar center.

So while I could be better at least I'm taking a few steps in the proper direction right?

It's not like I need to lose weight or anything, I'm actually at my medically healthy weight. I don't really eat a lot, but what I do eat isn't very healthy and with my family history that can be a dangerous thing.

So instead of making giant leaps why not just try a few small things everyone? I can't hurt right? With the way people here in the United States chow down on junk food it's about time we all tried to make some changes.

I think that dieting is hard but like so during the summer I would come home or even during the school year I would come home and eat so I decided that I would drink 1 bottle of water before eating and it worked really well.

Umm also like I went biking a lot one summer and would only eat something small for lunch and a small dinner and I lost like 10 lbs.
